Around 2,000 protesters took to the streets Wednesday to mark Labour Day, to petition for better remuneration and welfare for workers.
As the Legislative Assembly (AL) general election is just four months away, the petitioners also called for a more democratic political system, including additional directly-elected lawmakers and the right to vote on who becomes the Chief Executive.
The protesters came from over ten associations including groups and individuals.
They started their march from the northern area of the Peninsula and walked south towards the government headquarters in Avenida da Praia Grande.
Upon their arrival, they submitted their petition letters one by one to a government representative.
The police estimated a total turnout of about 2,000 people, which is a few hundred more than the official figures from the 2012 Labor Day march.
Participants had a diverse list of appeals for the government to consider, which included some elderly parents who want the government to make special arrangements to allow their children in the mainland to be able to immigrate to Macau for family union, others called for more effective measures to cope with inflation and some requested that the government build more public housing for those who cannot afford housing.
