Construction workers are due to break ground for the 4,279 residential units in the Macau New Neighbourhood (MNN) on Hengqin in mid-2023.
Luo Ping, deputy convener of the Central District Social Services Consultative Committee, said that Macao residents will be given priority to purchase a flat in what is the first residential construction project in the Guangdong-Macau Intensive Cooperation Zone, as long as they do not own any real-estate in Zhuhai or do not own more than one property in Macao.
She underlined that 4,279 MNN residential units will be put up for sale, with around 200 flats being set aside for “talented professionals”. The new neighbourhood is located a six-minute drive from the Macao-Hengqin border checkpoint.
Luo, who was speaking following a meeting with Macau Urban Renewal (MUR) officials, noted that the MNN project comprises 27 buildings; 80 per cent of the flats will have two bedrooms, and the rest will have three.
Space for commercial tenants, car parks and public facilities covers 5,000 square metres, she added.
According to Tai Ka Peng, a member of the government-appointed Central District Social Services Consultative Committee, ownership of the flats will follow mainland China’s standard rules, so it will expire after 70 years, adding that Macao enterprises will be given priority for business premises in MNN buildings. Tai said that the Macao and Hengqin governments plan to set up a public transportation system to connect Macao and Hengqin.
Fellow council member Vong Seng Peng pointed out that community facilities such as schools, health centres and public services centres will be monitored and run by the Macao government and associations.
The committee also discussed building projects in Macao. Vong introduced the planned reconstruction work to be carried out in the dilapidated 40-year-old Iao Hon Estate in the Macao peninsula’s northern district, saying that according to MUR officials there is a high possibility of renovating all seven buildings in Iao Hon at the same time, but this still needed to be confirmed with the affected buildings’ residents. Luo said that the Iao Hon Estate redevelopment project includes optimising the area’s transport system as well as widening its roads to 6.5 metres.
According to the MUR, the buildings earmarked for the Iao Hon Estate redevelopment project comprise Hong Tai House, Kat Cheong House, Son Lei House, Heng Long House, Mau Tan House, Man Sau House and Seng Yee House, with a total of 2,556 residential and commercial units, The Macau Post Daily reported.
