Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded robust growth across key metrics in the 2024 to 2025 fiscal year, with sharp year-on-year increases in passenger traffic, cargo volume, and flight movements, according to the latest annual report from Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).

Compared with the year prior, passenger numbers rose 21.6 percent to 54.9 million, cargo throughput increased 10.3 percent to 5 million tonnes, and total flight movements climbed 20.5 percent to 373,050, Xinhua reported.

“The past year was pivotal for Hong Kong International Airport as we crossed key milestones and air traffic continued its solid recovery,” said AAHK chairman Fred Lam. He added that the airport’s new three-runway system was delivered on time and on budget in November 2024, increasing annual capacity by 50 percent and reinforcing HKIA’s position as a leading global aviation hub.

HKIA’s air network also continued to expand, with 27 airlines launching new or expanding services to 56 destinations. By the end of the fiscal year, the airport was served by around 140 airlines, linking to more than 200 cities worldwide.

The report highlighted several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing HKIA’s long-term competitiveness. For example, the blueprint for a large-scale, luxury commercial development dubbed Skytopia was unveiled in January. It includes a 500 berth marina, a one-stop art trading and storage hub, a gourmet food market and a ‘sportainment’ complex.

Meanwhile, the airport’s Dongguan Logistics Park continued offering its sea-air intermodal transhipment service, with goods shipped hitting a total value of 18 billion yuan (US$2.51 billion) over the fiscal year.

A major milestone in Greater Bay Area collaboration was the AAHK’s acquisition of a 35 percent stake in Zhuhai Airport. AAHK described the move as a springboard that would unlock the full potential of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, serving passengers and supporting cargo expansion.
