Guangdong province has inked five economic deals with Hong Kong, following talks between provincial governor Wang Weizhong and John Lee, Hong Kong’s top official.

According to the South China Morning Post, the pacts spell out cooperation in finance, labour, technology, “smart city” operations, and medical and pharmaceutical regulation.

Lee reportedly said the new agreements represented “both sides’ determination and confidence in fostering further cooperation and contributing to the high-quality development of the Greater Bay Area”.

The news comes as a delegation of more than 100 consular officials and senior executives based in Hong Kong conducts a fact-finding tour of four Greater Bay Area (GBA) cities. The tour is being led by Commissioner Liu Guangyuan of China’s Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong, China Daily reports.

Closer integration of the GBA has become the new mantra of officials in Macao and Hong Kong.

Earlier this month, Lee led a delegation to Macao to deepen, he said, “Hong Kong’s co-operation with Macao, with a view to generating stronger impetus to the growth of the Greater Bay Area, including both SARs, and making greater contribution to national development”.

In February, Guangdong party secretary Huang Kunming said integration would bring “real benefits” to all cities in the area and would especially provide “opportunities for young people in innovation and entrepreneurship”.
