Greater Bay Airlines is celebrating its second anniversary by offering HK$20 (US$2.56) round-trip tickets to select destinations from Hong Kong, the Hong Kong-headquartered airline announced on its website. However, fine print reveals that the bargain-bin fares do not include fuel surcharges or taxes.
The limited-time sale started yesterday with flights to Bangkok, Thailand, and a different flight route is expected to be announced each day. Greater Bay Airlines currently flies to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport; Manila in the Philippines; Taipei, Taiwan; Tokyo’s Narita Airport and Osaka’s Kansai Airport in Japan; Seoul, South Korea; and Haikou, the capital city of China’s Hainan province.
The promotion will run until Thursday, then again from next Monday to Wednesday. Only 200 HK$20 tickets will be sold each day of the promotion, and passengers can only purchase one ticket each.

Instructions on how to obtain the discounted tickets were given on Greater Bay Airlines’ website and social media platforms. “At 10 am each day, check out our Facebook/Instagram for the announcement of the daily discounted routes, [then] at 12 pm each day, get the promo code from our Facebook/Instagram story and comment section,” they read.
Hopeful travellers could then plug the promo code into the airline’s booking system to be in with a chance to snag one of the day’s 200 discounted tickets.
The tickets were subject to a number of terms and conditions. For example, you must travel between 18 August and 18 December 2024, and can’t be away for longer than a week (the minimum period is two days). Fuel surcharges and taxes are in addition to the price, though 20 kilograms of luggage is included.
A recently advertised return Greater Bay Airlines flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok with 20 kilograms of luggage cost HK$720 outside of the promotion. The final price hit HK$1696 when taxes and surcharges were added, implying the HK$20 tickets could come with almost HK$1000 in added fees.
