Macao’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) will replace the present Typhoon Signal No 3 with Signal No 8 at 9:30 pm tonight as Nalgae continues to approach Macao and local winds strengthen.

As of 6:53 pm, Typhoon Nalgae was located about 140 kilometres southeast of Macao, moving towards the west of the Pearl River Estuary, according to the SMG.

Under the influence of a tropical cyclone, winds with sustained speed of 41 to 62 km/h are expected and gusts may exceed 110 km/h.

As the winds over the bridges are expected to be strong and gusty, forecasters have advised drivers to pay attention to traffic safety. Motorcyclists should travel between the Macao Peninsula and Taipa via the motorcycle lane on Sai Van Bridge.

When Signal No 8 is hoisted, traffic on Macao’s three bridges – connecting the peninsula and Taipa – will be suspended and cars may only cross the harbour through the Sai Van bridge underpass. LRT and buses will also be temporarily suspended. Floods are also expected in the Inner Harbour area.
