There could be four to six tropical cyclones entering within 800 kilometres of Macau this year, and there would probably be severe typhoons among them, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement Tuesday.

The statement said that as Macau is soon to enter the rainy and typhoon seasons, the bureau carried out an analysis of the current situation of oceanic and atmospheric circulation, which indicates an El Niño developing in the western Pacific Ocean that is forecast to be there until the summer.

El Niño (“Christ Child” in Spanish) is a weather phenomenon caused when warm water from the western Pacific Ocean flows eastward.

The statement pointed out that based on past records, such a climate situation would bring about four to six tropical cyclones within 800 kilometres of Macau, with severe or higher level typhoons among them, with the first tropical cyclone forecast to appear in around mid-June and the typhoon season predicted to last until early October.

In addition, the statement said that this year’s rainfall would be normal to slightly high during the rainy season from April to September, while the weather is forecast to be slightly warmer than normal.(Macaunews)
