As Severe Tropical Storm Ma-On bears down on Macao, weather forecasters have warned that Signal No 3 may be raised this afternoon, followed by Signal No 8 tonight or tomorrow morning.

After hoisting Signal No 1 yesterday evening, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said the chance of issuing Signal No 3 this afternoon is high.

“Severe Tropical Storm Ma-on will intensify gradually while moving towards the western coast of Guangdong,” the bureau announced.

“It will be closest to the Pearl River Estuary from the evening of 24 to 25 August, which will pose a considerable threat to Macao.

“Under the influence of the broad circulation, its rainband will bring unsettled weather to Macao tomorrow evening. Winds will strengthen significantly with frequent showers and thunderstorms.

“Under the combined influence of the storm surge and persistent rain, flooding is expected to occur in low-lying areas early tomorrow. The public is advised to take precautions against wind and flooding as soon as possible,” SMG said.
