The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) will issue Tropical Cyclone Signal No 1 this evening as Typhoon Ma-on is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Macao, according to the weather bureau.
The tropical cyclone is currently crossing the vicinity of Luzon in the Philippines and will approach the middle to western coast of Guangdong between tonight and tomorrow, posing “considerable threat” to the Pearl River Delta regions, including Macao, SMG said.
The bureau added that, since Ma-on’s forecast path may be adjusted to the west, if it makes landfall in the west of Macao, there will be a greater chance of storm surge in Macao. The public is advised to take precautions against strong winds and flooding.
