Court of Second Instance (TSI) judge José Maria Dias Azedo has been elevated to the Court of Final Appeal (TUI), where he will replace Viriato Lima who has reached the retirement age.

The appointment, which was signed by Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On and takes effect on December 17, was published in the Official Gazette (BO) on Monday.

Macau’s judges are appointed by the chief executive upon recommendation of an independent commission.

The Court of Final Appeal comprises three judges. It has been chaired by Sam Hou Fai since the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) on December 20, 1999. Dias Azedo will join Song Main Lei as the other TUI judge.

According to the Macau Post Daily, the president of the Collegiate Bench of the Court of First Instance (TJB), Chao Im Peng, was promoted to the Court of Second Instance to fill the vacancy left by Dias Azedo, according to the announcement.
