Gaming operator Sands China on Tuesday donated 500,000 facemasks to the government to support its battle against the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) epidemic.
The company said in a statement on Tuesday that Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U had accepted the first batch of 300,000 facemasks on behalf of the government at one of the company’s integrated resorts, The Parisian Macao, on Tuesday.
“Our thoughts are with the entire local community during this time of caution, and our company is pleased to be able to respond to the urgent need for facemasks in Macau as we cooperate with the Macau government in its virus prevention efforts,” Sands China President Wilfred Wong Ying-wai was quoted as saying in the statement, “We are confident that, with vigilance and collective action, Macau will navigate through this crisis successfully.”
The statement added that alongside frequent and proper handwashing, doctors and medical agencies around the world have stressed the importance of wearing facemasks as a vital and easy-to-implement measure to diminish the spread of the novel coronavirus and to protect oneself and others against infection.
“As Macau’s largest integrated resort operator and as a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp., Sands China is able to take advantage of its global procurement network to assist Macau in obtaining facemasks during this high-demand period when stocks are in limited supply,” the statement said.
