Local Portuguese community association “Casa de Portugal em Macau” announced on Monday that it has set up a donation account at BNU for the victims of wildfires in and around the central Portuguese town of Pedrógão Grande which has killed at least 62 people and injured over five dozen others.
The association announced the solidarity action in a message sent to the local media.
The message expressed the group’s solidarity with the residents of Pedrógão Grande and conveyed its members’ condolences to the bereaved families. It also wished all those injured in the disaster a speedy recovery.
Amelia Antonio, who heads the group, told the Portuguese-language radio channel of government-owned broadcaster TDM that “Casa de Portugal expresses its deep sorrow and is devastated by what happened [in Pedrógão Grande].”
Antonio, a Portuguese lawyer who has worked in Macau for decades, said that the donation account was what her association could do to help the victims “from a distance”. The account number is 9014444997.
Casa de Portugal em Macau (“Portugal’s Home in Macau”) is the city’s main Portuguese community association.
