Population reaches 679,600 in 2019, females 53% of total

Macau’s population at the end of last year rose by 12,200 year-on-year to 679,600, with the female population accounting for 53.3 percent of the total.

Macau’s population at the end of last year rose by 12,200 year-on-year to 679,600, with the female population accounting for 53.3 per cent of the total, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced today.

According to a DSEC statement, the proportion of the elderly population (aged 65 and over) grew 0.8 percentage points year-on-year to 11.9 per cent.

The local population, excluding non-resident workers and non-local students living in Macau, increased 1.2 per cent to 555,000, females accounting for 53.3 per cent of the total.

The elderly took up 14.6 per cent of the local population. The elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 21.0 per cent, indicating that five adults supported one elderly person.

In 2019, 5,979 live births were delivered, 54 more than in 2018, whereas the birth rate fell by 0.1 per mille point to 8.9 per cent. The sex ratio of newborns was 106.5, corresponding to 106.5 male babies per 100 female babies.

A total of 2,282 people died in Macau last year, with malignant neoplasms (benign, pre-cancerous and cancerous tumors) accounting for 35.5 per cent of the total number of deaths.

The number of non-resident workers rose by 8,058 year-on-year to 196,538 at the end of last year.

At the end of last year, Macau had 197,500 households, up by 3,100 year-on-year.

Based on Macau’s land area of 32.9 sq km, its population density stood at 20,656 inhabitants per sq km last year.
