A female civil servant who jumped into the sea near the Harbour Management Building of the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) in Pac On last week passed away early on Monday morning, according to a statement by Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man.
The statement noted that the deceased was a 48-year-old support staff member of DSAMA surnamed Chan. The case has been preliminarily classified as dead body found and has been referred to the PJ Investigation section for follow-up, the statement said.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Judiciary Police, Chan jumped into the sea last Wednesday near the open-air car park next to the bureau’s Harbour Management Building, which is part of the Taipa Ferry Terminal complex.
Chan restarted breathing and her heart started beating again after she was rescued by Customs Service officers.
However, she remained in a coma and needed the assistance of a ventilator after she had been rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment. She died at about 4 am on Monday. No suspicious wounds or bone fractures were found on her body. The cause of death is yet to be determined by forensic examination, the statement.
Last Wednesday, a PJ statement about the incident said that the women had “fallen” into the sea. However, Monday’s statement said that she had “jumped” into the sea.
Meanwhile, the Chinese-language TV news channel of public broadcaster TDM reported on Monday that the DSAMA on Monday expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The bureau said that it would do its best to provide the family with all the necessary support and assistance. The bureau will also provide psychological counselling for her colleagues.
