Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has set up a new research centre dedicated to studying cross-strait relations between Macao and Taiwan, according to the Macau Daily Times.
The new centre, part of MUST’s Institute for Social and Cultural Research, will connect Macao’s researchers with overseas scholars to examine “Macao’s special function in the new era of the cross-strait relations.”
“Our mission is to promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations – we want to make the centre an international-class research base,” said the centre’s director, Wu Kan.
The centre will organise symposiums and seminars about cross-strait relations, and publish journals and documents about related topics.
“Wu added that the department plans to set up several research bases covering topics from history to law.
Yan Zhichan, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao, commented that the new centre will boost the research power of Macao.
“The establishment of the centre will help strengthen Macao’s research power in the field of cross-strait relations, promoting non-governmental and academic exchanges between Macao and Taiwan,” he said.
“The centre will help Macao to function as a window, bridge, link and platform between the two sides.”
