A 62-year-old woman died from influenza Sunday, the third person to die from the flu this year, the Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement.
According to the statement, the woman experienced a high temperature and cough on May 17. She went to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre on May 19 and was immediately given Tamiflu after a rapid diagnostic test was positive for influenza B.
She was hospitalised after chest X-rays showed she had double pneumonia.
The statement said that on May 20 the woman went into septic shock and was put on a ventilator as she suffered respiratory failure. The woman was transferred to the ICU in the early hours of May 21 and died Sunday.
The statement pointed out that the woman was treated for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) before.
According to the statement, there have been a total of 100 cases of influenza with pneumonia or other complications since January.
Among them, eight patients – two children and six adults – suffered from severe influenza.
So far this year three patients have died from the flu. The previous cases were both elderly males, one aged 89 and the other 62.
The statement added that among the flu cases recorded by the Health Bureau, more than 80 percent of the patients did not have their flu jabs.(Macaunews)
