Macao will be a whole lot greener by the end of this year, as plans are in hand to plant thousands of trees over the coming months.
The Municipal Affairs Bureau aims to plant more than 5,000 trees in the green belts and on pavements by main roads throughout the city.
“The tree-planting work continues, with the goal of planting 3,200 trees,” said a bureau spokesman, adding that 2,118 trees had already been planted in the first quarter.
The green drive follows on the success of a similar plan last year, when 1,849 trees were planted.
The trees, which are native to southern China where the climate is similar to Macao’s, are planted in seedling form to better balance root and canopy growth, and strengthen the trees’ capacity to abate wind.
“Trees photosynthesise, absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, and mitigate global warming, and also settle suspended particulate matter, purify the air, and withstand wind,” the spokesman said.
“Therefore, planting trees extensively has a positive impact on the ecological environment and even human life.”
