A 22-year-old local man, who arrived in Macau from Wuhan on January 8, remains under observation in the isolation ward of the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre for medical tests to exclude the possibility of having contracted pneumonia of unknown cause during his visit to that city, the Interdepartmental Taskforce on Pneumonia of Unknown Cause said in a statement said.

According to a statement by the taskforce released through the Macau Government Information Bureau last night, the patient came down with a fever and shivering fits on January 11 when he sought treatment at the private Kiang Wu Hospital.

The statement said that the results of tests for common respiratory viruses were negative. The statement described his condition as stable, without any symptoms of pneumonia. However, doctors decided that the patient remain under observation in the isolation ward of the public hospital for further tests to ensure that he is not suffering from pneumonia of unknown cause after visiting Wuhan (popularly known as “Wuhan virus”.).

The statement said that between January 1 and on Sunday the Health Bureau (SSM) recorded 10 suspected cases involving patients who visited Wuhan and came down with a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness 14 days after having returned from that city. According to the statement, in eight of the patients the possibility of pneumonia of unknown cause has meanwhile been excluded. Two of the patients were still under observation on Sunday.
