A railway engineer from the mainland said in Macau it is possible that the national high-speed railway network will ultimately be connected to Macau.
Zhao Guotang, vice general engineer of China Railway Group Limited, delivered a speech on Tuesday about the development of the nation’s high-speed railway system at an event attended by local deputies to the National People’s Congress (NPC) and local members of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac and Legislative Assembly President Ho Iat Seng attended the talks in their capacity as local NPC members.
Macau has 12 NPC members and several dozen CPPCC National Committee members.
Local government officials and senior employees of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) operating in Macau also attended the event at the World Trade Centre Macau in Zape. The event was organised by the General Office of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.
According to the Macau Post Daily, Zhao said he believed that the national high-speed railway system will cover the Pearl River Delta in the future.
Including Hong Kong and Macau, the delta region consists of 11 cities. Currently, a high-speed is slated to be completed in the third quarter of next year.
Zhao, who has a doctoral degree in engineering, said he believed that once the whole Pearl River Delta is covered by a high-speed railway network, it would be possible that it could be connected to Macau
ultimately, adding that it was technically feasible.
The nation’s high-speed rail-l way is currently more than 20,000 kilometres in length, longer than all of world’s high-speed lines put together. France, Germany, Japan and Spain also have high-speed railway systems.
