Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosario said on Thursday that the construction of a huge public housing project on the plot of the abandoned La Scala luxury housing project near the airport will be carried out in four phases.

Rosario made the remarks when replying to oral interpellations by several lawmakers during a plenary session of the legislature.

According to The Macau Post Daily, the government announced last year that it plans to build the huge public housing project providing 8,000 units on the plot, which is at the bottom of Big Taipa Hill, in Avenida Wai Long.

The public housing project went through discussion in a meeting of the government-appointed Urban Planning Council (CPU) in October last year, an another meeting of the council in April.

In the two meetings, some members of the council disagreed with the proposed height limit of 155 meters. Some members also questioned whether the plot would be a suitable location for such a large public housing project.

Speaking during plenary session, Rosario said that the government would carry out an environmental assessment for the project, that it expected the assessment to take 12 to 15 months.

Rosario said that after the environmental assessment is completed, the government will then invite bods for the detailed design and the construction of the project, adding that the government will then invite bods for the detailed design and the construction of the project, adding that the government plans to develop the project in four phases.

Meanwhile, Rosario revealed during the Q&A session that the number of public housing units stands at 47,000. He also said the number was planned to reach 90,000, without saying when the figure would be reached.

The government’s public housing programme comprises social rental housing and subsidised homeownership flats.
