The government opened its new Civil Protection Operations Centre at the Immigration Department Building in Pac On in Taipa, with the aim of enhancing the security forces’ ability to handle major security incidents and crisis in the city.
The Immigration Department is run by the Public Security Police (PSP).
Since an amendment bill to the Security Framework Law and the law regulating the operations of the Unitary Police Service (SPU) came into force earlier this month, the Unitary Police Service is responsible for providing civil protection. Previously, civil protection was provided by the Security Forces Coordination Office, which has been abolished.
Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On unveiled the inaugural plaque of the new centre on Tuesday morning, accompanied by Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak and SPU Commissioner-General Ma Io Kun.
According to an SPU statement that the Macau Post Daily had access, the centre has a total size of 826 square metres, seven times larger than the previous one.
The centre was completed on April 15 and started to operate yesterday after the inauguration ceremony yesterday.
The previous Civil Protection Operations Centre was located at the S. Francisco Barracks on the peninsula.
After the inauguration ceremony, Chui observed the operations of the new centre, accompanied by senior security forces officers.
Ma told the media in the new centre that the Public Security Police, Macau Customs Service, and Fire Services Bureau (CB) each have one officer stationed and working in the centre 24 hours a day.
