The Macau Foundation (FM) has launched a Belt and Road (B&R) scholarship for residents to study for degree courses in a number of countries along the B&R Initiative, the public institution said in a statement on Sunday.

The application period starts today and will end on June 12, and the results will be announced in late July, the statement said.

According to the statement, the scholarship scheme is planned to run for five years with a total of 150 scholarships. A total of 30 scholarships are available for the academic year 2017/18.

The 30 scholarships for 2017/18 include 20 for fresh local high school graduates and students from Guangdong and Fujian about to graduate from undergraduate degree programmes in higher education institutions in Macau, according to the statement.

The 20 scholarships will be for students to study in Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Portugal. The scholarships will range from 60,000 to 80,000 patacas, depending on the places where the students will study, the statement said.

The statement did not say which subjects the applicants would need to study.

The remaining 10 scholarships will be for students in B&R countries and regions to study in Macau, according to the statement.

The statement did not specify which B&R countries covered by the 10 scholarships.

According to the statement, the B&R countries and regions consist of more than 60 economies in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The B&R Scholarship aims to promote exchanges among local students, students from Guangdong and Fujian, and students from B&R countries and regions. It also strives to train “talents” to jointly push for the B&R Initiative, the statement said.
