A dolphin was found dead floating in the sea off Ocean Gardens in Taipa Wednesday, the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) said in a statement.

This was the second case in five days, after a dolphin was found dead on Coloane’s Hac Sa Beach last Saturday.

The Macau Customs Service told DSAMA officials yesterday morning that a dead dolphin was found floating off Ocean Gardens.

The Marine and Water Bureau requested the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) and Macau Waste System Company (CSR) to handle the case, and also informed the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) about the case, the statement said.

In a statement , the Municipal Affairs Bureau confirmed that the dead cetacean found Wednesday was a Chinese white dolphin – formally known as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin.

In a statement on Monday, the Municipal Affairs Bureau confirmed that the dead dolphin found on Hac Sa Beach last Saturday was also a Chinese white dolphin.

IAM officials confirmed that the dead cetacean found off Ocean Gardens was an adult female dolphin, according to yesterday’s IAM statement, which said that the body of the 2.4-metre-long dolphin was decomposing and therefore the bureau buried the body immediately.

According to Monday’s IAM statement, IAM officials confirmed that the dead cetacean found on Hac Sa Beach last Saturday was a calf. The body of the 1.16-metre-long dolphin wad also decomposing and therefore the bureau cremated it later that day.

According to Wikipedia, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins from the Pearl River Delta are often pink and customarily referred to as Chinese white dolphins. They are “near threatened”, according to their official conservation status.(Macaunews)
