The preliminary design for the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) East Line has been completed and is currently under review, Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo Arrais do Rosário has announced.
The six-station, 7.6-kilometre line will run from the Gongbei Border checkpoint to the Taipa Ferry terminal via an underwater tunnel, connecting the reclaimed areas known as Zone A and E.
Rosário said it is likely to prove more expensive than the Taipa line, which cost MOP 10.2 billion, but stopped short of providing an estimate.
The Taipa line is currently out of action having been suspended for six months starting from 20 October while workers replace high voltage cables.
In related news, China Road and Bridge Corporation has been granted a MOP 938.6 million contract to build the Seac Pai Van LRT line. Preparatory work is already under way and the project should be completed in two years.
Construction on the underwater tunnel for the Hengqin LRT line is also going ahead, and is expected to be finished early next year.
