Macao International Airport (MIA) recorded over 29,000 passengers during the Chinese New Year holiday (31 January – 5 February), a 208 per cent increase year-on-year.
However, this year’s numbers still represent a 83 per cent drop from 2019’s Chinese New Year holiday (pre-pandemic: 5-10 February 2019), where 180,000 passengers were registered.
There were over 270 flights during the six-day period, an increase of 75 per cent.
According to the MIA , the airport continues to implement the “Guarding against imported cases [of Covid-19] and preventing a resurgence of the outbreak at home” pandemic prevention strategy. A closed-loop area and NAT sampling point have been set up at the airport, disinfection work is carried out continuously,venue codes have been prominently displayed and temperature checking points established at airport entrances.
The MIA noted that in accordance with the government’s Covid-19 pandemic prevention measure requirements, staff check passengers’ Macao health code, review their travel documents and pre-check entry QR codes of the respective destinations, and remind passengers to take good personal care during travel, including keeping a social distance of one metre and wearing face masks properly.
The MIA said that during the CNY holiday, the airport cooperated with airlines’ requirements about flight booking situation, arranged a sufficient number of check-in counters, monitored the site situation in real time to make dynamic adjustments and adopted crowd control measures.
