The Judiciary Police announced last night officers were notified by the Conde São Januário Hospital at 8:20 pm yesterday that a man, who had been admitted to the hospital after attempting suicide by drinking detergent, had been certified dead.
According to the police, the 90-year-old Hong Kong-born victim, surnamed Lo, lived in a flat in Taipa with his family.
At about 5 am yesterday, his relations heard some coughing noises in the bathroom and went to check, only to find Lo lying on the floor and telling them that he had consumed detergent.
According to a preliminary examination of the body, no suspicious or criminal injuries were found on the deceased, The Macau Post Daily reported. An autopsy will be performed in due course.
No suicide note was found at the scene, the statement added. However, the family members told the police that Lo had suicidal thoughts due to an illness.
The case has preliminarily been classified as a dead-body-found case.
The exact cause of death could only be confirmed by forensic examination, the statement pointed out.
