A high of 36 degrees Celsius has been forecast for tomorrow, along with thundery showers later in the day. A yellow hot weather alert is currently in effect, as issued by the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (known by its Portuguese initials SMG).

The rise in temperatures along the South China coast is being caused by a strengthening Typhoon Gaemi, which as of 7 am this morning, was close to the eastern coast of Taiwan. Financial markets and schools will be closed in some cities across Taiwan today.

Forecasters say the storm has the potential to become a super typhoon.

Gaemi is unlikely to hit the Guangdong coast directly. Rather, it is expected to make landfall further north, in the Fujian-Zhejiang area.

A trough of low pressure is expected to be affecting southern China’s coast by the end of this week, through to the beginning of next week, increasing the chances of sudden rainstorms in the region.

Today’s temperature is forecast to reach 34 degrees, with showers arriving this afternoon.
