Macao’s population rose to 686,400 people at the end of the first quarter of this year. This figure represents an increase of 2,700 people in comparison to the last quarter, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (also known by its Portuguese acronym DSEC).
The department notes that “the increase was mainly due to a rise in the number of non-resident workers living in Macao.”
The Labour Affairs Bureau earlier indicated that the migrant worker population had increased by 16 percent year-on-year, with DSEC stating that there were 2,808 more foreign workers in the first quarter than the previous quarter.

In terms of the population sex ratio, the data indicates that people assigned female at birth accounted for roughly 53 percent of the population, with a total of 366,200. Those assigned male at birth, meanwhile, totalled 320,200.
DSEC data also revealed there was a decline in the number of births, with records indicating 856 live births over the first quarter, a decrease of 105 quarter-on-quarter. There were 631 deaths during the quarter and 937 marriages – an increase of around 11 percent.
Forecasts by DSEC indicate that Macao’s total population will exceed 700,000 by the end of 2025 and will reach 829,100 by the end of 2041.
