Covid-19 cases among employees from all walks of life are surging in Macao and some shops are suspending operations due to staff shortages or health concerns.

While some residents are not worried about the current epidemic situation, a business association believes companies should always prioritise the health of employees.

The Federal Association of Macao Small and Medium-sized Enterprises has said that companies and merchants have reported many employee Covid-19 cases in recent days, according to TDM.

“We have received reports about employees getting infected in the office, retail industry and catering industry in the last 10 days,” said Feng Jianfu, the association’s chair.

“Planning and coordination of enterprises are very important. So enterprises have created rotating shift schedules to minimise the impact. We must put employees’ health first.”

With staff numbers falling, others have expressed concerns about a possible lack of essential supplies.

“From the government perspective, it won’t work if the city doesn’t open up,” said Lei Cheok Kuan, President of the Industry and Commerce Federation of Macao.

“I hope that everyone can have tolerance for uncertainty. As residents have trust in the government, I also hope that the government can assure the public that several categories of supplies including medicines and groceries are adequate.”

In related news, the Social Welfare Bureau revealed that 90 per cent of the 30 community network nursing homes are currently registering infections among users and workers.

The bureau said that measures have already been taken so that the asymptomatic infected staff can return to their jobs as soon as possible.
