Police have issued an urgent warning to Macao’s businesses – and restaurants in particular – to beware of fake order scams.
The Judiciary Police said that as of last month at least 21 restaurateurs had been scammed out of a total of MOP 2.5 million.
Many businesses, especially restaurants, have fallen for fake order scams, in response to which the police launched an anti-cheating campaign earlier this month to warn local restaurant owners about the deceptions and how to prevent them.
According to the police, since June fraudsters have resorted to fake order scams to cheat restaurateurs, such as by promising them a “commission” in order to lure them into paying bogus “food suppliers”.
In order to raise public awareness of fraud prevention in the catering industry, the Judiciary Police have been sending officers to visit local restaurants to spread their anti-fraud prevention message.
The Judiciary Police have also met with an online food delivery service platform in their ongoing effort to promote their anti-cheating campaign among restaurateurs, The Macau Post Daily reported.
