The University of Macau’s (UM) Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) and Department of Economics announced on Tuesday the completion of the first phase of their Macau Economic Database project.
According to a UM statement released through the Government Information Bureau (GCS), the project aims to create a comprehensive database that includes all the major economic indicators of Macau.
“It is expected to help researchers, students, and the public to better understand Macau’s economic and social development to enable them to take more effective actions that will raise the quality of life of Macau residents,” the statement said.
Data from the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) and the Macau Monetary Authority (AACM) as well as major economic digests published by private institutions have been converted into an easy-to-search format and have become part of the UM Library’s database for public use, the statement pointed out.
According to the statement, the current database comprises 15 sections: (1) population, (2) welfare, (3) education, (4) construction, (5) industry, (6) energy, (7) consumption, (8) prices, (9) government budgets, (10) tourism, (11) the monetary sector, (12) banking, (13) transport, (14) labour, and (15) external trade.
The statement said that the Centre for Macau Studies will continue to collect data from other sources, including official documents, academic articles, books, newspapers, and magazines, in order to extend the Macau Economic Database.
