The number of personal credit cards issued, directly or indirectly, by credit institutions in Macau reached 1.06 million at the end of 2016, representing an increase of 2.7 percent over in the previous quarter, the Macau Monetary Authority said on Tuesday.
The number of credit cards denominated in patacas, Macau’s currency, was 747,100, with another 91,500 cards in Hong Kong dollars and 220,600 cards in Renminbi, with increases of 2.3 percent, 4.5 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively, in quarterly terms.
The Macau Monetary Authority also reported there had been continuous growth in cards denominated in two currencies and in three currencies, compared to the previous year.
The credit limit of the cards granted by banks in Macau was 25.3 billion patacas by the end of the year, an increase of 5.4 percent from the end of September 2016.
Macau’s population totalled 647,700 people at the end of the third quarter of 2016.
