Approximately 1.05 million visitors came to Macao during the Easter and Ching Ming holiday period, which lasted from 29 March to 8 April, TDM says. The broadcaster’s report made reference to figures from the Judiciary Police.

The number of people departing from the SAR during the same period, meanwhile, amounted to 1.07 million.

The vast majority of people arriving in, or leaving, Macao during the holidays did so through the Border Gate or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, figures show.

The arrivals average out to 95,455 per day, which falls in line with the forecast of 100,000 visitors per day made by the head of the Macao Government Tourism Office, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.

Year-on-year, the visitor arrival figure this year marks a surge of approximately 75 percent from the corresponding number of 480,000 in 2023. The considerable difference reflects the recovery of the SAR’s tourism industry, which had been severely hampered by the strict pandemic restrictions that were eventually lifted at the tailend of 2022.

While the holidays brought in a substantial number of visitors to the city’s tourist districts, local businesses did not benefit much, with travellers choosing to stay outside of residential areas and locals preferring to do their spending in mainland China.
