The Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ) will start studying before the end of the year whether local dealers – also known as croupiers – should be barred from gambling in local casinos, DICJ Director Paulo Martins Chan said on Wednesday.
Chan made the remarks after attending a phone-in programme hosted by Ou Mun Tin Toi, the Chinese-language radio channel of government broadcaster TDM. The former prosecutor also said the bureau would talk to representatives of the gaming sector about the matter soon.
Some of Macau’s gaming and junket operators are known to ban their dealers from gambling in casinos and VIP rooms where they work.
Both Chan and Davis Fong Ka Chio, director of the University of Macau’s (UM) Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming (ISCG), were invited by the radio station to discuss the supervision and development of the city’s gaming industry. Chan also said the possible gambling ban on croupiers needed “consensus in civil society”.
