Gaming revenue in Macau plunged 79.7 per cent in March compared with the same period in 2019, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) said on Wednesday.
According to DICJ, March gross gaming revenue (GGR) was MOP 5.26 billion (US$658.3 million). In 2019, GGR was MOP 25.84 billion.
Gross gaming revenue in the first 3 months of 2020 was MOP 30.48 billion (US$3.8 billion) a decrease of 60 per cent compared with the same period in 2019.
Macau’s 41 casinos were closed for 15 days – between February 4 and 19 – to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus locally.
As of mid-March, around 80 per cent of Macau’s casino tables were back in action, but with social distancing restrictions.
The number of visitors in the last days totalled around 300, while in 2019, the statistical daily average was around 108,000 visitors.
In 2019, Macau received a total of 39.4 million visitors.
Operators Wynn Macau, Sands China, MGM China, Melco Resorts, SJM Holdings and Galaxy Entertainment are losing between US$1.5 million and US$4 million a day to keep their properties running.
