Both incoming and outgoing flows of travellers have increased dramatically in the first half of this year, as expected with Macao’s borders fully reopening.

In June, hotel occupancy rates sat at 84 percent – a 44 percent year-on-year increase, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). Averaged over the first six months of the year, Macao’s hotels have been about 78 percent full. Five-star and two-star hotels are the best performers, according to the DSEC.

Ten more hotels were operating in Macao in June than at the same time last year, the DSEC said. The total number of available guest rooms grew by almost 16 percent, to 43,000.

Hotel guest numbers in June were up 168 percent year-on-year, totalling 1.14 million. Most came from mainland China (816,000), followed by Hong Kong (196,000), then Taiwan (24,000). Guests from these places soared year-on-year by 155 percent, 898 percent, and 592 percent, respectively. Mainlanders were able to enter Macao relatively easily during the pandemic, accounting for their lower increase.

Meanwhile, hotel stays by Macao residents dropped by 44 per cent. In June, 37,000 Macao residents purchased outbound services through travel agencies – a year-on-year uplift of 1,062 percent. Averaged across the first six months of the year, 173,000 Macao residents have purchased outbound tourism services – a rise of 793 percent.
