Vandy Poon Fuk Hei, CEO of local telecom operator CTM, said Tursday that the company would bring 5G technology into commercial use in the first half of 2020, at the same pace as neighbouring regions.
CTM and government-owned broadcaster TDM held a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony at the CTM headquarters in Taipa, formalising their collaboration on a new media platform riding on the 5G network. It was attended by about 40 CTM and TDM representatives.
Poon announced the 5G launch schedule in a speech. He noted that the applications based on 5G technology are developing rapidly while the development and testing of 5G networks are in full swing around the world, adding that the implementation of 5G in areas such as technology education, medical care and daily life would create a 5G ecosystem in the near future, which would form an important element in building a smart city.
According to Poon, in order to keep pace with the global trend, his company has been working closely with its various stakeholders to introduce applications based on 5G technology with the aim of developing the Digital Macau 2.0 project.
Poon added that the cooperation deal with TDM means that 5G real-time live streaming technology is landing in Macau. He pointed out that 5G is still in the trial phase in other countries and regions.
Moreover, Poon underlined that CTM is exploring the various possibilities for 5G technology applications with its stakeholders such as the University of Macau (UM), adding that his company will adopt its technological advantages to help start-ups get off the ground and create greater market space for development.
Poon said that CTM would bring 5G into commercial use in the first half of next year, keeping up with the pace of neighbouring regions, adding that he hoped to work closely with different sectors with the aim of introducing various 5G smart applications and services that meet the needs of the local community.
TDM Executive Committee Chairman Manuel Pires said in a speech that TDM would be able to improve its broadcasting quality and present 4K viewing experiences to its audience by using the upcoming 5G technology, adding that the broadcaster would optimise its outdoor live broadcasting performances for news and programmes as well as enhance the station’s picture quality and stabilise its broadcasting connection.
During the ceremony, the two companies demonstrated the first 4K real-time live streaming based on 5G network testing equipment set up in Largo do Senado and at the CTM Headquarters in Taipa, showing Macau’s new media transmission application.
CTM has set up the first 5G experience zone at its Taipa shop to let residents experience live streaming and connectivity of the 5G network.(Macaunews)
