Macau’s gross gaming receipts fell 11.3 per cent year-on-year to 22.12 billion patacas last month, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced on Saturday.
Month-on-month, the receipts were down 3.1 per cent in January.
Last month’s year-on-year decline was less than the one in December, DICJ figures show, and this despite the Wuhan virus threat.
Macau has seven confirmed novel coronavirus cases.
Last month’s receipts were similar to those in December (22.83 billion patacas) and November (22.87 billion patacas). Receipts in December and November fell 13.7 per cent and 8.5 per cent year-on-year respectively.
Last year’s receipts dropped 3.4 per cent to 292.4 billion patacas.
At the end of last year, Macau had 41 casinos, 22 owned by SJM, six by Galaxy, five by Venetian Macau, four by Melco Crown, and two each by MGM Grand Paradise and Wynn. The total number of gaming tables stood at 6,739 at the end of last year, when the number of slot machines amounted to 17,009.
Macau has been hit by a decline of nearly 80 per cent of visitor arrivals since Chinese New Year’s Eve on January 24 due to the novel coronavirus crisis.
