  • However, the company now says it needs to gather more feedback before releasing Recall to the general public – for fear of how it could be used by hackers.

Microsoft is not launching its new artificial intelligence (AI) tool, Recall, with its Copilot+ personal computers (PCs) today – as had been planned. Instead, it will wait for more feedback before making the feature “broadly available,” CNBC reports.

The decision was made following concerns about privacy and security raised by industry experts, who highlighted the potential it posed for hackers to get hold of sensitive information like usernames and passwords.

Recall, unveiled last month, is an advanced AI tool that takes frequent screenshots of everything users see and do on their computer. It creates a detailed timeline of a device’s history, allowing users to search back through their previous activity.

Earlier in the month, Microsoft committed to three major security updates to Recall, including making it an opt-in experience (instead of on by default), encrypting the database, and authenticating it through Windows Hello.

However, the company has since decided to initially offer Recall as a preview through its Windows Insiders Program (WIP) instead of as a “broadly available [feature] for Copilot+ PCs” – according to a blogpost written by Windows corporate vice president Pavan Davuluri.

Microsoft now reportedly plans to make the AI tool available to all Copilot+ PC users after receiving feedback through the WIP. “This decision is rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers,” Davuluri wrote.
