An outdoor concert venue is to be built in Cotai, on a large plot of land next to the Grand Lisboa Palace, according to a report by TDM, which cited unnamed persons familiar with the matter.

The public broadcaster said that the land had been “cleared in recent weeks” and was “being prepared to host major events.”

However, it added that there was currently no timeline for the hosting of events and performances on the site.

Officials have been considering a purpose-built outdoor venue after a concert by K-pop group Seventeen at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium in January sparked an avalanche of noise and traffic complaints from disgruntled neighbourhood residents.

Fans also damaged the stadium’s pitch and the promoter was required to pay for its restoration.

In the wake of the fiasco, the government established an interdepartmental task group to coordinate and handle applications for large-scale outdoor events in public facilities. Elsie Ao Ieong, the social affairs and culture secretary, told media in February that while local resorts offered an array of indoor venues, the SAR needed an outdoor space suitable for at least 20,000 people.
