An ambitious programme of events will mark Macao’s designation as a Culture City of East Asia in 2025, according to a government statement.

Officials say the lineup will include “large-scale cultural expos, international conferences, and intangible cultural heritage showcases, as well as cultural, sports, and tourism events.”

The events will be organised under the theme of “East Meets West, Asia in Harmony.”

The government says it will also use the city’s new status to “consolidate further Macao’s role as a multicultural exchange and cooperation base with an emphasis on Chinese culture.”

The Culture Cities of East Asia is an initiative designed to promote artistic development and exchanges between China, Japan and South Korea. China nominates two cities each year, while South Korea and Japan nominate one each.

Macao is the first Chinese city outside of the mainland to be given the honour, which it shares with Huzhou in Zhejiang province. Japan and South Korea have yet to nominate their cities for 2025.
