A jobless man made his wife take the blame after driving while drunk and crashing into three parked cars, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said in a press conference on Wednesday.
According to Kam, at 11:50 pm on Saturday a resident reported a car accident in Rua Alegre, near Areia Preta. Kam said when the police arrived, they found the suspect’s private vehicle and three cars parked on the side of the road, adding that all four cars had different levels of damage.
Kam said that at the scene, the 28-year-old suspect, surnamed Chan, said that his 36-year-old wife had caused the car accident. Kam added that the two were taken to a police station for further questioning.
According to Kam, the wife lied to the police and admitted to the crime. However, the police found Chan and his wife’s story suspicious. Kam said that after further questioning, the wife, who works as a public relations staff, told the police that after her husband had called her that night about his car crash, she rushed to the site and agreed to take the blame. Kam added that the officers warned her husband, who then admitted to the crash.
Kam said that Chan told the police that he had attended a friend’s wedding in Taipa at 6 pm on Saturday and drank some alcohol, and that the accident occurred when he was driving home. He also said that after the accident he panicked and called his wife for help. According to Kam, Chan’s alcohol concentration was 1.98 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.
Chan and his wife were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday.
According to the police, Chan is facing a charge of avoiding responsibility for a traffic accident and drunk driving. The wife who lied to the police is facing a charge of aiding and abetting the perpetrator of an offence.
