Macao casinos’ gross gaming revenue (GGR) in June dropped by 25.9 per cent month-on-month to MOP 2.48 billion, according to data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ).

The figure is the lowest this year and can be attributed to the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak which has disrupted the entire city and led to all government departments and public services to shut since 20 June, non essential shops to temporarily shutter and more. Many tourists have since left the city, leaving it almost empty of visitors.

Previously, Macao’s lowest GGR this year was recorded in April, which ended with just MOP 2.67 billion. Compared with last year’s June GGR of MOP 6.5 billion, last month’s GGR dropped by 62.1 per cent.

In total, Macao’s GGR in the first half of the year decreased by 46.4 per cent year-on-year from MOP 49 billion to MOP 26.27 billion.

Prior to the pandemic, the combined GGR of the first half of 2019 was recorded at MOP 149.5 billion – a 82.4-per cent drop to this year’s figure.

As of this year’s Q1, there were a total of 42 casinos in Macao run by six gaming operators SJM (23), Galaxy (6), Venetian Macau (5), Melco Crown (4), Wynn Resorts (2) and MGM (2).

The number of gaming tables and slot machines as of the first quarter of this year was 6,025 and 11,615, respectively.
