The 11th Macau International Short Film Festival is open to the public, with entrance to all the films being shown free to attract movie buffs from Macao and the mainland, the president of the film festival, José Luís de Sales Marques, told reporters on Tuesday.

Sales Marques made the remarks on the sidelines of the festival’s opening ceremony at Dom Pedro V Theatre.

The festival, which is organised by Creative Macau and the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM), said in a statement that it is screening 160 short films and nine musicals from over 40 countries and regions from today until next Tuesday at the theatre in Largo de Santo Agostinho.

According to the statement, 4,232 films were submitted in March and after the jury’s careful selection, 132 are being shown at the festival. The statement also said that the films are grouped into four categories: fiction, documentary, animation, and music video.

Sales Marques said that the festival is dedicated to movie lovers and makers, adding that the event is also a way to showcase the beauty of imagination around the world. He also said that he hoped the festival will be able to attract visitors from the mainland, especially from the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Sales Marques also pointed out that the festival is being held in the UNESCO-listed Dom Pedro V Theatre because it is an iconic edifice, pointing out that it’s the oldest Western theatre in the Far East.
