The future Macao Central Library will no longer be built in the Old Court building, in Praia Grande, according to Rádio Macau.

The station also said that no new location was chosen by the government to build the Macao Central Library and no information was given for the future use of the current facilities.

The construction of the Macao Central library has been under discussion for the last 15 years due to alleged irregularities and different opinions regarding the location and cost of the project.

The last figures released in 2019 indicated that the construction of the Central Library has a budget of MOP 900 million (US$113 million).

The location of the Macao Central Library in the Old Court was one of the main projects of former secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng and the former president of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Guilherme Ung Vai Meng.

The architecture competition for the library design was won by Carlos Marreiros in 2018.

Last June, the Macao government admitted that the location and construction of the library would be studied again after the completion of the Macao Master Plan.
