Macao recorded 9 fatalities as a result of workplace accidents in 2022, the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) announced on Saturday – an improvement in 2021, when 15 people lost their lives in such a manner.

There were 4,274 workplace accidents last year, the DSAL said, listing the three main causes as “falls”, “trapped limbs or impaling or cut injuries” and “overexertion or twisting”.

DSAL officials carried out 3,205 inspections in different workplaces last year – at commercial establishments as well as construction and industrial sites – imposing penalties in 91 cases for unsafe working conditions.

Two people were fined for accidents caused by violations of occupational safety and health rules, according to a statement by the bureau cited in Macau Post Daily.

The local government is making moves to allow for non-residents to work as construction safety officers in Macao.

Earlier this year, officials said that construction technology was changing rapidly but the corresponding safety personnel may not be available in the territory.
