Macao’s new Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute begins operations today, according to a statement released over the weekend.
The institute is a merger between the old Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute and the permanent secretariat, or support office, of Forum Macao. The merger took place “with a view to optimising the internal structure and enhancing service efficacy and efficiency” of both bodies, the statement read.
The official abbreviation for the newly minted government agency will continue to be IPIM, because the official name in Portuguese remains Instituto de Promoção do Comércio e do Investimento de Macau.

Its main responsibilities will be attracting businesses and investors to Macao, supporting companies exploring new markets, helping develop the SAR’s meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) industry, and facilitating Sino-Lusophone trade and cooperation.
The organisation’s public service counters, official websites, email addresses and contact numbers will remain unchanged – as will those of Forum Macao’s permanent secretariat, according to IPIM’s statement. Its social media accounts will be updated with the new English name “without affecting the existing subscribers’ access to the latest information.”
The new board of directors also assumes office today. They include president Vincent U and executive directors Sam Lei, Wong Yee Lam and Leong Wa Fong.
