Macau Juvenile Delinquency Research Society Chairman Chiang Cheok Meng called Monday for better sex education in local schools.

Claiming that pupils’ sex education was lacking, Chiang called on teachers to give them more comprehensive sex education lessons.

According to The Macau Post Daily, Chiang, who is a social worker and care worker by profession, made the remarks on the sidelines of a seminar held in Hotel Royal about sex education and sex-related crimes involving teenagers in Hong Kong, Macau, the mainland and Taiwan, arguing that while pupils in Macau were receiving sex education in their classes, the contents did not give them a complete and detailed understanding of sexual health.

He further suggested that new teachers might feel inhibited about teaching sex education to pupils, pointing out that they might not be willing to discuss the subject with their pupils, resulting in schoolchildren not be given the relevant information to help them deal with issues related to becoming sexually mature.

Chiang further argued that teenagers might not know how to protect themselves which might have contributed to the under-reporting of sex-related crimes as victims might not be even aware that they had been assaulted.

“… So I hope that schools will give pupils a better sex education so they will be more knowledgeable about it,” said Chiang, adding he hoped that local schools would set up training courses for teachers to show them the best way of teaching
the subject to their pupils and what is needed for the various age groups.(macaunews)
