The Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 6 p.m. today as Tropical Storm Nuri is edging close to the city.
According to an SMG statement, the signal will remain hoisted at least until 11 p.m. At 6 p.m., Nuri was located about 280 km south-southwest of Macao in the South China Sea and moving towards the coast of Guangdong province, the statement said.
According to the SMG website, there is a “medium” probability that the signal No.8 will be hoisted around midnight, while it said that the probability of the “blue” storm surging warning was “low”.
The hoisting of the Signal No. 8 means that a tropical cyclone continues to approach Macao. Winds with a sustained speed of 63 to 117 km/h is expected or blowing and gusts may exceed 180 km/h in Macao, according to the bureau’s website.
The “blue” storm surge warning indicates that the water level is expected to be below 0.5 metre above road level. It is the lowest of a five-level warning system.
