A Tourist Police station opened Tuesday at the former headquarters of the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS).
The former GCS headquarters is located next to S. Domingos Church in the city centre.
Officially, the station is called Tourist Police Service Centre.
The opening ceremony of the station was attended by Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak, Unitary Police Service (SPU) Commissioner-General Ma Io Kun, as well as other senior government officials and local community leaders.
The Tourist Police unit, run by the Public Security Police (PSP), was established in 2017.
The government first said in 2017 that it planned to convert some of the space in the former GCS headquarters into a Tourist Police station.
In November last year, the Public Security Police said that some of the floors of the former GCS headquarters would be converted into a Tourist Police station.
The Public Security Police said at that time that the station was slated to open this year, where the Tourist Police officers stationed there will answer tourists’ questions and handle suspected crime cases reported by visitors.
Addressing the opening ceremony, PSP Commissioner Leong Man Cheong said that the police decided to choose the location as their Tourist Police station as the area has the city’s highest density of tourists.
Leong said that the Tourist Police station includes facilities such as reception hall, reception counters, duty rooms and barrier-free facilities.
